Building Walls Around Your Heart
Building walls around your heart,
To keep pain out,
Is not so smart.
'Cos in the end
You'll feel so numb -
It's safer, true,
But pretty dumb.
To feel some pain
Is to be alive,
Then love flows in
And heart survives;
Survives to love,
Which heals the pain,
So walls come down,
Let warmth remain.

Keele University - Social Role of an Escort
I was recently asked to speak at Keele University. to the Dept. of Gender, Sexuality & Law on "The Social Role of an Escort". I included this poem at the start of my talk. Part of the discussions surrounded how policy-makers construct laws from the point of view that women shouldn't be in sex work, whilst not considering free will, or the positive part that sex work can play in society, not least with disabled people, and those who, otherwise would have no sexual outlet.
Policy Assumes:
How can she do
The job she does?
(I see it in their eyes)
They do not know
It takes all sorts
- I just work well with guys!
Maybe she needs the money
(They say)
Perhaps it's a traumatic past?
Sweeping judgements they make -
All so wrong! -
It's my choice -
Assumptions are daft!
Policy assumes it's a job
Not alright;
Forgets simple choice, free-will,
Human right.

When everyone around me
Goes on their way, oblivious -
You're here.
We meet in secret
spirit to Spirit,
I whisper my thanks for not being alone.
Your words don't scold me,
They uphold me, enfold me, like a spider's web,
Delicate and strong,
Engineering thread,
An embroidered bed.
How can it be
That I should know,
This special place of love so free,

WHO definition of sexual health
WHO (World Health Organisation) defines sexual health as:
"The integration of physical, emotional, intellectual and social aspects of sexual being, in ways that are positively enriching and that enhance personality, communication and love".
So why are thousands of people in care homes, hospices and many disabled people denied the right to a sex life? Imagine having no arms, but still having a sex drive. Imagine not being able to touch yourself if you feel sexually aroused. Imagine the impact which this frustration can have on feelings of self-worth. Now multiply that a hundredfold, when it occurs month after month for years. It's time for the health service, care homes and people who work with disabled people, to recognise that sexual health is as much a part of general health as good physiotherapy, good nutrition, correct medical treatment, and family support. Sex is not something in isolation of health, or some luxurious add-on, like chocolate truffles! - Sex is integral to well-being.

Erotic Awards Ceremony 2007
I was surprised but happy to win the award of "Sex Worker of the Year" at this year's Erotic Awards ceremony in London on the weekend. The awards and "Night of the Senses" ball that follow, help raise money for the very worthwhile charity "Outsiders", which helps promote the right of disabled people to have an active sex life.
